POSITION:

Technical Crafts Technician – Level 1

 

DEPARTMENT:

Facilities – Technical Crafts

 

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision performs mechanical (65%), electrical (25%), plumbing (5%) and telecom (5%)

trouble shooting and repairs. In HVAC or utility systems will conduct troubleshooting using diagnostic test

equipment, perform visual inspections to determine failure or scope of repairs, will isolate malfunction and

initiate approved corrective action. Daily operations include accessing Energy Management System (EMS)

to support daily HVAC operations, adjust building operating schedule, perform initial diagnosis, inspect

mechanical room equipment, complete work orders and perform schedule/unscheduled preventive

maintenance as assigned. Required to order material, parts and equipment for trades to support routine

maintenance, special projects and contractors. Respond to emergencies, take control of situation to

minimize further damage to property and return systems to operation. Technically competent to perform

repairs to trade standards/practices on all campus utilities (electricity, gas, water and telephones) and

building HVAC systems. Repairs will be incompliance with all acceptable/relative building practices and

codes. May support or assist contractor on projects beyond scope of dept. Install and maintain electrical

service/components ranging from low to high voltage (460VAC). Expected to perform independently

at/above Journeyman level.

EDUCATION:                                                                 

High school degree or GED. At least five years of progressive HVAC maintenance experience. Basic

computer skills. Texas Driver’s License to operate motor vehicle.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS, AND  ABILITIES:

Technician assigned to work with CFC refrigerants must have and maintain valid certification (Universal

level) in accordance with federal law. Registered with TDLR as A/C technician. Technician must be able to

troubleshoot, inspect, operate and repair commercial property, HVAC systems and high/low electrical

voltage systems. Must maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law. Trades Journeyman is a

plus. Strong understanding of acceptable building practices, codes and procedures. Ability to

communicate both orally and in writing. Able to adapt to constantly shifting demands. Must exercise

judgment and decision-making capability in the absence of direct supervision. May be subject to medical

inquires and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Subject to random drug

testing. Department has responsibility to provide scheduled and unscheduled repair coverage 365 days per

year. Expected to complete all assigned tasks with general supervision from Technical Crafts Crew Leader.

Will order parts with supervisor’s approval.

Salary will be based on experience and qualifications within an established pay range. Benefits include
